In her book Grit, psychologist Angela Duckworth shares a refreshing take on passion: “Passion for your work is a little bit of discovery, followed by a lot of development, and then a lifetime of deepening.”
To make it easier to remember, I think of passion is 3D → Discovery. Development. Deepening.
Say it again with me:
💫 Discovery.
💫 Development.
💫 Deepening.
What she’s saying here is huge, in my opinion. I grew up thinking we build our life around the passion we’ve found at a young age. But this refreshing take reveals that passion isn’t something you’re born with, it’s something you build.
So if you’re like me and you love stressing about “finding your passion,” maybe let’s both drop that pressure?
Let’s try this instead: Start small, try new things, let yourself learn, and keep building.
Passion isn’t a single spark you wait around for. Passion is the fire you create over time.
📝 Design your life like a prototype.
Think of your life as a series of drafts, not a final product.
When designers create prototypes, they don’t expect perfection. They expect mistakes, feedback, and iterations (a lot of them). That’s exactly how we can approach life.
Instead of waiting for the “right” passion or perfect opportunity, let’s try things out. Even make a checklist if you want.
💡 Some ideas? Take a weekend class in something new like pottery or pilates. Launch a tiny side project you’ll share with closest friends. Volunteer for a cause you care about like helping dogs get adopted.
And remember! Each experiment you do gives you data. You’ll see what excites you, what drains you, what feels worth pursuing. The passion just really evolves from there.
I think the beauty of this mindset is that we remove the pressure to get everything right the first time. We just make do.
We’re not failing, we’re learning ✨
And every prototype we create nudges us closer to a version of life that feels aligned, intentional, and genuinely ours.
👋🏻 My game plan → Meet new people.
My next life prototype is my social circle. I’ll do a little experiment on expanding my network, both professionally and personally.
Did you know I can count my friends by my fingers? And yes, that means less than 10 haha! For me, friends are my people who really understand me, know me, and I can call at 2am for nothing.
I will join meet-up hobby groups and make friends here in Barcelona. I won’t pressure myself. I’ll see who’s gonna stick and I’ll nurture that friendship from there on.
Wish me luck? 🤗
